BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
We will have our annual Blessing of the Animals Saturday, October 4, at 5:30 p.m., on the lower lawn. October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, a thirteenth century renewer of the Church who was very attuned to the care of the poor and needy and all of God’s creation. Historically, the commemoration of St. Francis has been a traditional time to bless pets and animals which Francis called our “brothers and sisters.” Participants are asked to bring pets caged or restrained appropriately.

THANKFUL LIVING
Holy Trinity members and friends have an excellent record of giving. We are reminded to keep our offerings current; and, all are challenged to make additional gifts according to our many blessings. Our mission and ministry needs are ongoing and require our faithful support. Thank you for your generosity!
OUTREACH PROJECT
Our October outreach project is paper products – such as paper towels, toilet paper, and facial tissues – for L’Arche House, a faith-based group home that serves those with developmental disabilities. Lynchburg’s L’Arche House is located behind Boonsboro Shopping Center. Jean Vanier, the founder of L'Arche, wrote: L'Arche believes in the dignity of every person. This is expressed in a life shared between people with an intellectual disability and those choosing to join them in community. We seek to help each other to grow and develop towards our potential. Paper products may be brought to the church throughout the month of October and placed in the outreach basket in the narthex.
HURRICANE RELIEF OFFERINGS
The need continues three years after the devastating impact of the 2005 hurricanes. The loose offerings collected at Sunday Church School and Wednesday Program are again designated for our partnership with Peace Lutheran Church in Slidell, Louisiana. Holy Trinity has joined other Virginia Synod congregations and interested individuals pledging $50 per month to assist this congregation as it continues the recovery process from Hurricane Katrina.
COMPLINE
Prayer at the Close of the Day Mondays, at 8:00 p.m. Conclude your day with prayer, silence, and reflection. |

2009 ADULT GERMANY TRIP
It is not too late to get onboard as plans progress for Holy Trinity’s Lutheran Heritage Tour to Germany next summer. Projected dates are July 6 - 20, 2009, and highlights of the proposed itinerary include a visit to our sister congregation in Holzminden; Martin Luther historical sites in Eisleben (birth place, baptismal church, death place), Eisenach (the Wartburg Castle), and Worms (site of the Diet in 1521); the baptismal church of Johann Sebastian Bach; medieval towns; cathedrals; the birth place of George Frederick Handel; a short cruise on the Rhine River; Heidelberg; the Dora concentration camp memorial near Nordhausen; the Bavarian and Austrian Alps; and, much more. Please speak to Pastor Roberts if you are interested in additional information. The registration deadline for the trip is October 31 (Reformation Day!).
CHALLENGE GIFTS
A very important aspect of meeting Holy Trinity’s 2008 financial needs for mission and ministry is the “One Dollar Per Week” challenge adopted at our annual congregational meeting in December. Each household is asked to respond to this need by either adding an extra dollar to weekly offerings or by making a one-time, $52 contribution. A special offering envelope was included in our offering envelope booklets (June 1) for this challenge gift. Please use the special envelope or mark your gift “Challenge Offering” so that it may be recorded properly.
Holy Trinity is a blessed congregation. For some, an extra dollar per week may be impossible, while others can give many times that amount. May we all respond in faithfulness and generosity according to our many blessings so that Holy Trinity’s mission of ‘caring actively in the name of Jesus Christ’ continues to grow and expand.
